University of Arizona Travels to Baylor

This past weekend the University of Arizona went on tour and beat the University of Texas on Friday night and then traveled to Waco to take on the Baylor Bears on Sunday. Due to some injuries and ‘retirements’ the Baylor squad is very young and would surely be tested by this 1st Division opponent. The game kicked off @ Noon in beautiful, but windy weather.

Starting Baylor Lineup (1st Team):

1 Dylan Gray
2 DJ Spence
3 Sebastian Price
4 Rob Geiersbach
5 Miklos Valdez
6 Jack Noe (Replaced by Rhett @ 45th minute)
7 Nate Sloan
8 Gavin Goetchius (Co-Captain)
9 Ryan Phillips
10 Jeff Kreisel (Captain)
11 Cody Riles (Replaced by Mark @ 65th minute)
12 Jon Hoskett
13 Josh Terndup
14 Jordan Dubuisson (Replaced by Josh Key @ 70th minute)
15 Brent Jukubec

The University of Arizona took the 20 mph wind in the 1st half and took full advantage of it. Poor tackling, lack of aggressiveness, and inexperience showed in the first 40. The University of Arizona ran in tries at the 7th, 28th, 37th, and 39th minutes of the first half along with scoring a penalty conversion in the 22nd minute. This left the score at 25-0 at halftime. With the wind still blowing like crazy this was not an insurmountable lead, but Baylor would have to pick up their game quite a few notches.

Baylor Travels to TCU for Friendly

The game started late after it was determined that TCU never confirmed the referee. The referee went to Waco while the BU Bears traveled to Ft. Worth. Once all this was sorted out the game kicked off at 3:10 pm Saturday afternoon.

The first half was a seesaw affair with Baylor scoring in the 4th minute with a Brent Jakubec try (Converted by Jon Hosket), then TCU came back to score a try at the 8th minute, followed upa few minutes later by a Blake Rogers try in the 14th minute (Converted by Jon Hosket). The final points of the first half went to TCU as Baylor continued to play sloppy rugby. Leaving the halftime score tied 14 – 14.

After some words of encouragment from coach Scott Washko the Bears seemed to get things on track ans scored in the 46th (Jon Hosket – unconverted), 74th (Jon Hosket – unconverted), and 80th minute (Jeff Kreisel – converted by Jon Hosket), while only surrendering one more unconverted try. Leaving the final score Baylor 31 – TCU 19. Baylor appreciates TCU hosting us in this friendly as both teams get prepared for their first cup matches of the season. Baylor still has a lot of work to do, but seems to be getting on track at the correct time.

This weekend Division I College rugby club the University of Arizona will be traveling to Baylor to take on the Bears. This should be a real test and a tough game for both teams. The game will kickoff SUNDAY, October 23rd @ Noon.

See you there…

Baylor vs. Dallas Reds Mens Club

October 8th, 2005

Baylor University took 2 sides to play the Dallas Reds this past weekend to continue to develop and blood their young players and looking to build toward our first cup match in November. Dallas Red are a very established and strong Division II Men’s Club and are looking to regain their previous status of being a Division I strength.

Baylor still has a lot of learning to do and the experience of the Men’s side showed on the day. The Baylor Bears did have some bright spots however and their backline continued to improve and were effective at shutting down the Reds backs. Our inexperience in the pack continues to show as our scrum and rucking at the breakdown situation needs dramatic improvement over the next several weeks.

Baylor came out firing with a try to 8-man Blake Rodgers after a bobbled kickoff resulted in him grubbering it down the field and then outrunning the cover defense to take the lead 7 – 0 after a successful conversion by Flanker Gavin Goetchius. Later in the game Brent Jukubec continued to score tries one late in the first half off of a chip kick by flyhalf Jeff Kriesel and another one on a nice individual run of 50 meters.

Final score Baylor 17 – Dallas Reds 49

1 Sebastian Price
2 Dylan Gray
3 Chip Camp
4 Rhett
5 Miklos Valdez
6 Rob Geiersbach
7 Gavin Goetchius
8 Blake Rodgers (C)
9 Ryan Phillips
10 Sean Reid replaced by Jeff Kriesel due to injury.
11 Cody Riles
12 Josh Turndup
13 Brent Jukubec
14 Jordan Dubuisson
15 Jeff Kriesel (CC) replaced by Shawn Tracey.

Tries:
Blake Rodgers (1st min); Brent Jukubec (37th min, 55th min)

Conversions:
Gavin Goetchius (1 of 3)

Cowtown Results

Well, not much good news to report from last weekend’s Cowtown Tournament in Fort Worth. We had two sides in the tourney. Baylor in the Collegiate Premiere Division, and the Geezers in the Men’s Premiere Division. Both sides went winless, while Baylor put on a better showing than the old farts.

Bracket

Baylor played tough matches against A&M, Rice and the Quins U-23 side, while the Geezers missed an opportunity to beat Fort Worth in game 1, then, thanks to injuries, cramping, and being old, got blown out by Tulsa and the Collegiate Select squad, led by none other than former Baylor Head Coach Mike Kwedar, who respectfully played a lot of different guys so as not to blow us out too bad.

All in all it was fun, I suppose, but man, what a run of injuries for the Geezers, who at least looked darn good for the first 5 minutes in their new Adidas All Black Geezer kits.

The Geezer Hit List:
Oliphant » 5 minutes into game 1, hurt knee, out for day.
McGuigan » hurt off and on in game 1, out for day.
Washko » cut above eye early in game 2, out for day.
Lewis » busted chin in game 2, out for day
Mackey » sick, tired, old, played 2 of 3 games.
Bloodrive » cramped, missed game 3
Teddy » cramped, missed game 3

The Survivors (Played all 3):
Duce
Kenny
Travis

The Not Really Geezers but Thank God They Played Awards:
Reuther » Brilliant runs, good endurance, sorry we couldn’t get you a win.
Cruz » Great runs, top notch kicking, and running down Kwedar kicks in the last match
Lathrop » Went all 3 games, and provided some relief with a piggy back ride against the Selects.
