The old boys could not hang this year. For the first time in quite a while, the alumni were defeated by the current BURFC club at the annual Baylor Rugby Alumni Festival in Waco.
Men of the match were Gavin Goetchius for the alumni and Nate Sloan for BURFC. Fitness was – as usual – a major factor. Coach Nick Lane has the boys looking good this year. They are fit, they hit hard, and they play team rugby.
The event was a huge success, overall, generating over $3,600 for the Baylor Rugby Association. A special thanks to all who attended to support BURFC.
Mark those calendars now. This event takes place every Labor Day weekend in Waco. Next year’s dates are September 3rd-5th.

What another great weekend to see friends and family from across the country. We had another great turn out and raised thousands of dollars for the club. The final numbers are still not in because there are a few that are still making donations online, but it looks like we will be close to $6,000. That is short of our goal by about $1,500 so if any of you have companies that would want to donate or have the ability to reach back in your pocket again then we could reach our goal of $7,500.
Game news: The Geezers came out and scored and early try through Zach Oliphant (converted by Brian Dusablon). Not too much later the Geezers struck again through a great run by David Harris but he was brought down just short of the tryline and dumped the ball to Brian Dusablon (coverted by Cody Riles) to go up 14-0. From there the game calmed down a bit and was a back and forth afair before the Baylor squad kicked over a penalty to close the gap to 14-3. Brian Dusablon went on to score his second try of the game to take the game to 21-3 (some how the referee gave us an extra try so the halftime score was 26-3). Nick Lane and Jeff Reuther were determined to have their troops fired up for the second half and came out guns blazing and quickly closed the gap to 22-26. At that point the Geezers tightened up their defense and punched in two more converted trys through a nice break by Cody Riles and a try by Brenner Lowe (one unconverted by Cody Riles one converted by Zach Oliphant). It was a great game and a great time. The Baylor squad did quite well holding up to the size of the Geezer pack and as they continue to follow the direction of their coaches they should be poised to have a very good season.
Awards:
Young Buck Award (BU MVP) – Jon Linnett
Prehistoric Primetime Player (Geezer MVP) – Dr. Lewin
Also as an update to everyone that wasn’t there this weekend; Jason Mackey, Matt Lewis, and David Harris will be planning a charity golf tournament in the Spring to have a second fundraiser during the year (more details about that will be coming over the next several months).
Thank you again to everyone that either donated or worked to make this event a blast!!!

So far we’ve had only seven people register for the festival and donate online.
But with those seven people, we’ve already raised $1,025!!! We’re on a good pace to reach our $7,500 goal. It’d be great if we could make it at least halfway before the festival with online donations.
Click here for instructions on registering and donating.
See you all in 10 days!
