UNT Knocks Off Baylor 30-15

Baylor lost to UNT on Saturday, going down 30-15.

UNT came to play and Baylor took till the 2nd half to start playing rugby, by this time it was too late.
At half time the score was 25-5. Baylor managed to win the 2nd half (10-5), but as we all know rugby is an 80 minute game.

Our three tries were scored by winger Matt Wedige, Josh Dewalt and Andy Audet.

We will now face SFA on Feb 28th in Waco for the Texas quarter final. The game should be at 2pm.

This will be our only focus as from the now the competition is a ‘knock out’ set up. Meaning if we lose our season is over.

Baylor 19 MSU 10

Baylor 19 MSU 10
Baylor travelled to Wichita Falls on Sat Feb 7th to play in our 3rd cup match. MSU won the toss and decided to play with the wind. Baylor got off to a great start from the kick off. MSU maintained pressure on us, keeping us in our half until around the 25th minute, fullback Lloyd Sherman kicked down field. Lloyd and winger James White chased the kick. James got a lucky bounce and the ball landed in his hands where he took it in for our first try. Lloyd Sherman made the difficult conversion, putting Baylor in front 7-0. MSU got a penalty just before the half time leaving the score at 7-3.

Baylor planned to take advantage of the wind in the second half and we actually managed to do that for the 1st 20mins, a good run from centre Chris Brown put Baylor in MSU’s 22m and few phases later hooker and captain John Schnacke crossed over for a 5 pointer. Lloyd converted the try and Baylor were up 14-3. Only 5 minutes later, replacement centre Travis Bonning made a good hard run up the centre of the field and set the team up in great position. A few phases later, lock Josh Dewalt crossed over for our third and final try. Unfortunately Lloyd could not convert this time, leaving the score at 19-3. We were up on the scoreboard and in a strong position, unfortunately we lets ourselves down. Over the last 15 minutes, Baylor had 18 penalties against us. MSU managed to score a try after Baylor was matched down the field from 4 penalties in a row. MSU converted the try and left the score at 19-10.

This was another win, putting us at 3-0 for cup matches. Though if we continue to switch off mentally against better sides we may not be so lucky in the future.

Baylor Earns Scrappy Victory Over Angelo State

Baylor traveled out to San Angelo on Saturday to play in our 2nd cup
match and final game for 2008. It was a very scrappy game but Baylor
managed to rack up another win, 17-12.

Baylor played into a heavy wind in the 1st half but managed to stay in
San Angelo’s territory for around 30 minutes, even with all this field
position we could not convert it to points. Baylor turned the ball over
through a silly mistake, San Angelo swooped on it and took it down the
field 75 meters to score, the try was converted leaving Baylor trailing
7-0 at half time.

We used the tail wind in the 2nd half and once again pinned ourselves
down in San Angelo’s half, eventually the break came when powerful
running winger, James White, crossed over for a try. Lloyd Sherman
could not convert, Baylor was still behind on the score board 7-5.
Baylor lapsed in their concentration for a few minutes and once
again San Angelo took it down the field to score. At 12-5 it was going
to be another stressful, final 15 minutes for all the Baylor players
and supporters on the side line.
Fly half Phil Woessner put us down field with a good kick, Lock Josh
Dewalt stole the lineout ball close to San Angelo’s line and after a
couple of phases replacement prop Adam Torres crashed over, the
conversion was missed. Baylor still trailing 12-10.

San Angelo had a poor restart and gave Baylor a scrum on the half way,
No 8 Tim Smith made a good charge down field, the ball made its way out
to winger James White, who once again cut in field and blasted his way
through 4 tacklers to touch down for his 2nd try. Lloyd converted and
Baylor hit the front for the first time, 17-12. With only 5 minutes
left on the clock, Baylor played it smartly and held onto the ball
until the final whistle.

Well done to all the players who travelled out to San Angelo, even the
couple who did not play. It is always hard to travel a long way and
play rugby, but “a win is a win” and we will take it.

Baylor now moves to 4-1-1 (1 draw with Texas Tech) for the season, but
more importantly 2-0 for cup matches. Putting us in great shape for the
rest of the season.

Baylor Victorious at TCU (29-17)

Baylor travelled to Ft worth on Sunday, 9th to play TCU in our first cup match.

TCU came out kicking in the first 20 minutes and I literally mean kicking the ball any oppoturnity they got, attempting to pin Baylor down in our own half. Baylor defended well time and time again when TCU made attacks at our line, eventually TCU made a mistake and we managed to get ourselves out of our own half. Once again TCU decided to kick downfield, a poor kick by their fullback landed right in the hands of left winger, James White, on the half way mark. James took the ball and carved through TCU taking it all the way down the field scoring his first rugby try and most importantly Baylor got first points on the board, Lloyd Sherman made the conversion giving us a 7-0 lead. This lifted our spirits and we managed to play some rugby down in their half, eventually another break came, good lead up work by the forwards provided a good platform for the backs and left winger, James White, managed to cross again, Lloyd converted again, giving us a 14-0 lead. Close to the half time break, we let our defense down and their fly half squeezed through a hole and touched down for a try, TCU converted, we went into the half leading 14-7.

The second half was a close battle for the first 25 mins, TCU got another try making the score 14-12. Baylor had around 3 opporturnities to score, twice the ball was help up over the line. Eventually flanker, Ben Montgomery crossed for a 5 pointer, Lloyed missed the conversion, leaving the score at 19-12. Once again TCU cam back and scored another try and aslo converted. The score was now 19-17 and the last 15 mins was going to be a ‘nail biter’, although that turned around when hooker, John Schnacke, charged down a kick, regathered the ball (all in 1 move, we are still wondering how a hooker could have done this?) and then charged down the field 75 meters to score. We held on for the rest of the game, 1 more try was scored by half Chad Hall, leaving the final score at 29-17.
